Martin Weinhold grew up in the G.D.R. (East Germany) and is now based in Berlin and Toronto. He has dedicated his life to documentary photography, social documentaries and especially the contextualized portrait. For this purpose, he ventures into long-term projects, exploring the respective subject-matter with great thoroughness. Previous work includes portraits of painters and sculptors situated in the part of Berlin that previously belonged to the socialist East and a portrait series of sixteen-year-old students attending a Catholic School in Germany. His latest and most ambitious venture, WorkSpace Canada (shot from 2006-2016), is an overall composite portrait of contemporary Canada that shows the country through its people and their occupations in every single Canadian province. His work got regularly exhibited, is published in four books, and is part of the collections of the Library and Archives Canada, the Berlin State Gallery (Berlinische Galerie, Preußischer Kulturbesitz), as well as many private collections from Newfoundland to British Columbia.
