About the gallery

Ryerson Gallery is a student and faculty-run gallery programmed by the School of Image Arts which focuses on providing a venue for contemporary Canadian, film, new media and photography.

Gallery History

The Ryerson Gallery was founded in 1990, when Mr. Albert White offered the Film and Photography Department exhibition space at 80 Spadina Avenue.

Under the direction of the Dept. chair, Don Snyder, more than fifty students, faculty, alumni and friends transformed Suite 316 into the school's first off-campus exhibition space. The gallery opened on November 30th of that year. Since then, the Gallery has continued to expand, and has encouraged an active year-round exhibition schedule.

About the gallery

The gallery on the 3rd floor of the Image Arts building has a mandate to provide exhibition space for the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the school. The audience is the immediate Ryerson community and exhibitions of the completed bodies of work, work in progress, and group shows, are both encouraged and welcomed.

Exhibitions are not subject to formal examinations by a selection committee, however Peter Higdon, the Curatorial Manager of the Study Centre also acts as the gallery's coordinator and schedules and reviews all exhibitions. The duration of each show is generally one week. A limited number of frames are available to use for exhibitions in the gallery.
