Mackenzie King hosted President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Quebec City August 11-24, 1943 to discuss military operations in the fight against Nazi Germany and the development of the atom bomb. LAC C-014168.

In his diary, King noted of the crucial contribution of Canada in producing the atom bomb, “Much of the uranium and heavy water are in our country.” Roosevelt and Churchill agreed to have Canada participate in the production of the atom bomb. King’s close friendship with Winston Churchill and President Roosevelt resulted in the complete integration of Canada within the U.S. Manhattan Project at the highest political and organizational level.
