At the Hiroshima Peace Museum, a bronze Hiroshima Buddha melted by heat from the August 6, 1945 air burst of the Hiroshima atom bomb. Bronze melts at 1,600 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature on the ground under the exploding bomb reached 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit. “This is your greatest photograph,” a Russian traveller to the Peace Park told me. “It shows that even the Gods are vulnerable to nuclear weapons.” Photo and text by Robert Del Tredici.
