Mayor John Tory rededicated the Peace Garden as a memorial to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and lit the peace flame with Father Massey Lombardi. Father Lombardi told the people gathered at the new Peace Garden, “We stand on holy ground.”

“I hope that our Peace Garden will continue to be a beacon for Torontonians, to inspire us to take action for peace,” Setsuko Thurlow said before she poured water from Nagasaki into the reflecting pool as a symbol of solidarity and peace.
